Back to the Workplace: Minimising Exposure After COVID-19 with Safety Workwear and Practices

After months of living in sweatpants and track tops, you will need to put on your corporate attire and return to the office – but will you be able to shake off your worries in your usual office attire?

Things will be a lot different when South Africans head back to their office cubicles in the city. It is only natural to expect guidelines that include distancing, frequent hand washing, heightened housekeeping, respiratory etiquette, and protective workwear. That is right; our workwear is going into full “zip-up mode” over the next few months.

Dress Your Employees for Safety

Fortunately, we are heading into winter, which will make things a lot easier for South Africans. But if you expect your employees to place their lives on the line, then the least you can do is dress your workers appropriately in quality workwear that will keep them safe and warm. Besides stocking the workplace with plenty of disinfectants, start by dressing your employees in the following workwear:

  • Face mask and gloves;
  • Coat, gown, or zip-up overall to place over clothes;
  • Hair and shoe covers; and if necessary
  • Respiratory protection.

Safe Work Practices Are Just as Essential

Although South Africans need to get to back to work, it will not be easy. To combat both the spread of the virus and the negative emotions connected with it, employers must arm themselves with the correct safety work practices and up-to-date education and training. Employers must educate employees on risk factors and protective behaviours like coughing and hand washing etiquette.

Educate Your Employees

The Occupational Health and Safety Act require that every employer maintain a risk-free, safe work environment. Whereas dressing employees in quality protective workwear is the first step forward, employers should also communicate with their employees about the virus. Employers must develop a plan that educates on the virus’s impact on livelihoods and how employees can protect themselves in the workplace and out of the workplace.
